With the Re4/4 into a New Era. In 1947 a new generation of locomotives appeared on the Swiss rail network. The Swiss Federal Railways were able to revolutionize its entire concept for motive power with the purchase of the Re4/4 I. This locomotive had two power trucks and no pilot trucks. Its maximum speed of 125 km/h or 78 mph enabled considerably shorter trip times.

This locomotive is still considered today as a milestone in the history of Swiss locomotive building. The Re4/4 I was swift and at just 57 metric tons was a remarkably lightweight unit. It mastered its period of use extremely well. It introduced a new era in SBB passenger service with the transition from heavy, sedate express train service to accelerated city-to-city connections with short, regularly scheduled timings.

The Re4/4 I had a power output of 1,855 kW or 2,520 HP was a very good general-purpose locomotive, whose push/pull and multiple unit controls made it suitable for a rationalized push/pull train service as well as for m.u. motive power operation. The good reserve of power for acceleration present on these locomotives with their electric resistance brakes made them the ideal combination with the comfortable SBB lightweight steel passenger cars.

These train consists left their stamp for a long time on the image of passenger train service for long distance city-to-city connections.

These locomotives are nearly identical to the Re420, having a lower maximum speed and a slightly higher tractive effort used to great effect in Gotthard freight traffic. In 1983 locos 11351-11353 went to the Sud Ost Bahn (SOB) to complement their 1967 built Re4/4 41.

A locomotive exchange with the SBB saw transfer of the four prototype Re440 locomotives to the Sud Ost Bahn (SOB), with the SBB receiving back its original three Re430's plus the older SOB Re4/4 41 which became SBB_Re430 11350. This unit carries only a single pantograph. Five further Re4/4 III's were later added, then all were divested to SBB cargo.
