The Sr1 was the first electric locomotive in Finland. It was ordered from the USSR for political reasons, but much of its electric parts were built in Finland by Oy Stromberg Ab, now part of ABB. Despite its Finnish nick name Siperian Susi (Siberia Wolf), it has been reliable. The locomotives have thyristor rectifiers controlling four DC traction motors. From 1995 to 2003 locomotives 3100-3112 had their maximum speed raised to 160 km/h.

The Sr2 is the newest and most effective locomotive in Finland. They will operate at speeds up to 200 km/h in Intercity service, and will also haul heavy freight trains. About 50% of each locomotive will be manufactured in Finland. The first locomotives from a series of 20 were delivered in 1996. On 12th January 1999 VR_ordered 20 more locomotives and on 29th December 2000 another 6 locomotives, to total 46 locomotives by 2003. The Sr2 is a member of the "Lok 2000" family and the design is closely based on the Re 460 of the Swiss Federal Railways, as well as the Re 465 of the Bern-Loetschberg-Simplon Railway. The Norwegian State Railways (NSB) have also ordered the same locomotive as type EL18.

In 1978 VR_planned to modernize the Dr12 locos. The Dr15 was a trial locomotive for a series of heavy diesel locos, modified from Dr12 2239 in 1980, then abandoned in 1984. As the new lines were electrified, VR_decided in 1982 to buy new 1500kW 80 tonne diesel shunters also capable of hauling passenger and freight trains. This was later realised as the Dr16.

Dr16 is the newest diesel locomotive in Finland. Two prototype locomotives, numbered 2801 and 2803, were equipped with Wartsila engines and scrapped in March 2004. The other 21 locomotives were fitted with the SEMT-Pielstick 12PA4V200 VG engine and had their power reduced by 137kW because of technical problems. This class has a semi official nickname of "Iso Vaalee" (Big Blonde).

The Dv12 is the most numerous locomotive in Finland, with nearly 200 units in use. It is used as a light shunting, passenger and freight locomotive. Delivery occured in three series during 1964-1984. It is often used in double or triple units. The locos have the same power bogies as the German V216 locos.
